How To Find The Right Fitness Classes In Liverpool & Merseyside

An Average Gym Has About 15 Different Classes Running Each Week. How Can You Guarantee That You Have Found The Right Fitness Class In Liverpool For You?

When you join a gym in Liverpool and pick up your studio timetable you are spoilt for choice, or so it seems. Fitness classes starting from 6am in the morning right through until 9 or 10 at night. You can't go wrong.....

When i first started working in gyms in London i taught a lot of classes. I used to teach, body pump (it was on number 14 back then), spinning, Circuits, Body Combat (that was on number 2 back then), spin circuits, running clubs, ab classes, swiss ball or as the time table called it - core stability. I think 'core stability' was the main fitness word to use at the time and people like to think they were being 'functional' too...........

I have never taught yoga (although i used to go) or pilates (enjoyed that more than yoga) but they do have a benefit in your ability to train and also in the development of the body. So as i am not qualified in yoga or pilates i do not feel it is right that i talk about them.

Now with the classes i did teach the ones that got the most significant results all had the same 'principles'. There were all full body workouts that combined weights and cardiovascular activity.

Body Pump was brilliant (except for the pulses) as you trained the whole body through a series of exercises including clean and press, squats, dead lifts, rows......the main building blocks for any toned figure. The only problem i had with this class was initially trying to get women to increase their weight loads for further results. As the classes went on and i had a regular following the development of the women from increasing their weights meant they increased their muscle mass and reduced a shed load of body fat, and what's more they didn't end up all bulky and full of muscles, which was the misconception that they thought would happen.

Spinning / Spin Circuits: I rarely taught spinning on its own. Now the reason for this that although you would burn a high amount of calories it was all cardiovascular work. And a lot of people that came to the class were only going to classes and not using the gym so therefore were not lifting weights. Spinning works really well when taught properly. One thing that annoys me when i go to spinning classes now is when the instructor has you doing press ups on the bike. Its a bike class, how many cyclists do you see riding down the road doing press ups! And doing those types of press provides limited development and the hold at the bottom causes cramp .......Spinning uses a lot of interval and fartlet work on hill sprints and flat sprints. This is where you will burn an awful lot of calories and really shed the weight and fat.

I would run my spin classes for 30 minutes and then finish with a 15 minute full body weighted circuit class.

Ab Classes are boring, very limited results and a class just designed to fill the timetable. You need to do additional classes alongside these to get any benefit. If you just trained you stomach and lower back you won't get a six pack. So please do not waste your time in gyms in Liverpool by just attending these types of classes.

Core Stability / Functional Classes: Now this was one of the biggest training tools in the early 2000 and late 1990's. Core stability and functional training became a massive training tool and gyms were having all gyms balls and swiss balls across their floors helping people to to strengthen their core. And gym ball classes when taught properly, and not just a class full of sit ups and ab work, can get you a lot of development. BUT if you want to strengthen your core and become for 'functional' then why eliminate the basics of this type of results. SQUATS, DEADLIFTS, CLEANS, CLEAN AND PRESS, SQUAT AND PRESS......how much more functional can you get than that? And how much of your core (abs and lower back mainly) do you think will be working in these exercises? Do not get sucked in with this type of training on gyms balls and think that long term you will get a significant amounts of results because you won't. The basics are the same but remember to provide a resistance to your training to get real results.

In Liverpool we teach classes that includes all of the principles that i have seen to get significant results in clients. Fitness classes in Liverpool need to provide you with: PROGRESSION, DEVELOPMENT, MOTIVATION, ENCOURAGEMENT & ACCOUNTABILITY.

And what i mean by accountability is that if you do not attend for a few weeks or are one of these people that goes for a month, has a few weeks off, decided you are going out for a weekend then want to hit the gym again.................(ill let you finish this)
